Football playoff pairings see No. 5 Merced facing Jesuit

Le Grand only local team ranked No. 1 in section playoffs; Hilmar a 2 seed

If Merced High football coach Rob Scheidt knows anything about the Bears' first-round playoff opponent, he knows it will be battle-tested.

The Bears (8-2) earned the No. 5 seed and will open the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 playoffs on Friday against No. 12 Jesuit (7-3).

The Marauders finished fourth in what is widely considered the best conference in the section — the Delta River League.

"I don't know a lot about them but I know they're a good football team," said Scheidt on Saturday, shortly after the playoff matchups were released by the section. "They have some wins against some quality opponents and their losses are to even better opponents.

"We're going to have to make sure we come out ready to play."

The DRL landed four teams in the Division 1 playoffs, including top seed Folsom (10-0).

Jesuit fell to the No. 12 seed after blowing a 21-point lead in the second half to No. 3 seed Oak Ridge (9-1) on Saturday in a 45-42 loss in overtime.

"They score points," Scheidt said. "Looking at their statistics, they're pretty balanced. They've given up some points, but that was against some very good teams."

Atwater coach Bob Valladao knew his team was going to get matched up with a tough opponent if the Falcons made the playoffs and they did in No. 3 seed Elk Grove (9-1) in Division 2.

"Looking at their scores, they have a tough defense," said Valladao, whose team earned the No. 14 seed. "They have three shutouts. They beat Grant 7-3. From what we've heard, their defense is pretty stout."

The Division 2 bracket is loaded with 10 league champions.

Le Grand (10-0) earned the top seed of any local team with No. 1 seed in Division 5. The three-time defending section champion has a first-round bye. So does No. 2 seed Mariposa (8-2).

They'll be joined in the Division 5 bracket by Delhi (5-5). The Hawks made the playoffs after the section office found out on Saturday that Vacaville Christian earned one of its victories playing eight-man football, which doesn't count in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

With that win not counting, Vacaville Christian didn't have enough wins to qualify for the playoffs and Delhi was in.

The sixth-seeded Hawks will travel to No. 3 Golden Sierra (5-5).

Despite finishing as the only 10-0 team in Division 4, Hilmar was bumped to the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Central Catholic (9-1). The Yellowjackets will host Liberty Ranch (6-4) in the first round.

Pacheco (7-3) earned the No. 9 seed in Division 3 and will travel to Sacramento to face Christian Brothers (7-3).

Stone Ridge Christian (5-5) earned its first playoff berth in school history. The sixth-seeded Knights will travel to No. 3 Ripon Christian (8-2) in the Division 6 playoffs.
