Anchorage, AK (SportsNetwork.com) - James Woodard scored a game-high 24 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with just eight seconds left to lift the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a thrilling 63-62 triumph over the Indiana State Sycamores in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.
Woodard shot 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc for Tulsa (1-4), which will face TCU in Friday's semifinals. D'Andre Wright came off the bench to net 12 points, while Lew Evans narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
For Indiana State (3-2), Devonte Brown was the lone player to score in double figures with 18 points on 4-of-5 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free- throw line.
Tulsa shot just 37 percent from the field in the first half, while Indiana State wasn't much better at 37.5 percent. After a tightly-contested opening 20 minutes, the Golden Hurricane took a slight 25-24 lead at the break.
The story was much of the same in the second stanza, as the teams stayed within one possession of each another for most of the half. With Indiana State holding a one-point lead with 22 seconds to play, Brown was sent to the foul line and hit 1-of-2 to put the Sycamores up 62-60 before Tulsa answered back with Woodard's dramatic 3-pointer for the win.
Tulsa was able to overcome a lackluster field goal shooting effort (.385) by winning the rebounding battle, 38-27.
