Christmas classics concert

Merced College Chorale will perform Christmas classics and carols under the direction of conductor Curtis Nelson. Featuring “John Rutter’s Magnificat” with Jenny Dahman as soloist. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday in the Merced College Theatre. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Contact the theater box office at (209) 384-6284.

Rescue service needs help

New Beginnings Merced is a nonprofit dedicated to saving shelter animals and finding them new homes. The group needs volunteers, especially those who can care for kittens or dogs and their puppies for a short time. Help with photographing shelter animals is needed, as are people who can transport them to rescue organizations, for which no personal vehicles are needed. Call (209) 769-2122.

Air museum offers tours

The Castle Air Museum Foundation is a nonprofit organization with opportunities for students, volunteers, and others. For information on hours of operation, special events, volunteering, and guided tours for schools or clubs, call (209) 723-2178.

VFW has burgers and more

The Atwater VFW post accepts soiled or tattered flags for proper disposal at 1390 Broadway. The VFW also provides free wheelchairs and walkers to veterans in need. The group holds a hamburger night Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Call (209) 358-7224.

Support for mental illness

Merced County’s branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness holds biweekly support groups for families affected by serious mental illness. For more information, call (209) 381-6844 and a volunteer will contact you within 48 hours.

Shelter in need of toiletries

The D Street Shelter needs supplies such as shampoo, conditioner, bars of soap, deodorant and toothbrushes. Travel sizes work well. For more information, call Renee Mounce at (209) 725-8188 or (209) 947-8386.
