‘Blue Christmas’ service

Many people are grieving and find it hard to put that sadness aside to get into the holiday spirit. There is a place that helps keep sadness and grief from feeling awkward and unwelcome. A ‘Blue Christmas’ service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Merced United Methodist Church, 899 Yosemite Pkwy.

Christmas program

Christmas Program, “The Gift of Jesus” is 10 a.m. Sunday at Calvary Temple, 2740 N. Highway 59, Merced. Free.

Remembrance Service

Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the D Street Shelter, 317 E. 15th St., Merced. Join for a moment of silence in remembrance of friends and neighbors who have died without a home.

Christmas Eve service in Atwater

Atwater Baptist Church, 2124 1st St., will hold Christmas Eve service at 6 p.m. For more information, call (209) 358-5427.

New Year’s Eve party

Celebrate with the Twi’ Lighters from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve at the Merced American Legion Hall, 939 W. Main St. Latin, country, salsa and old-school music. Limo transportation from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., one-way only. $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For more information, call (209) 626-6105 or (209) 356-8676.

Club Mercedes 2014 dance

Club Mercedes will hold a New Year’s Eve dance from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., 569 W. Ninth St., with music by Force ’Em, beverage and snack bar. $15 per person, Must be at least 21 to enter. Call (209) 383-9906 for more information.

Spirit of Christmas luncheon

The 23rd annual Spirit of Christmas luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Boys and Girls Club, 615 W. 15th St. Free and open to all. Participants will be treated to free groceries. To donate or to get more information, call Joe at (209) 726-5251.

Help with warming tent

Volunteers are needed to staff a warming tent December through March. . The tent is on B Street near 13th Street. Volunteers work from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Contact Bruce Metcalf at (209) 480-3899 or Phil Schmauss at (209) 658-9558 for more information.

Big Trees winter event

The Winter Wonderland at Calaveras Big Trees State Park is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 27. Activities include a wagon ride, crafts for kids, music, hot cocoa, apple cider and cookies. $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for children under 12. The ticket price includes the park entrance fee if purchased online. Buy tickets at or call (209) 795-3840 for more information.
