Both the Los Banos and Pacheco girls basketball teams were foiled in a pair of 39-37 losses at tournaments last Friday – but they did it in very different ways.

While the Tigers were scoring just 2 points in the fourth quarter of a 39-37 loss to Mendota in the semifinals of the Chowchilla Tournament, Pacheco scored 19 in the fourth quarter only to fall just short, 39-37, to King City in the consolation bracket of the Alisal Winter Jam in Santa Cruz.

Los Banos recovered to win the third-place game 50-24 against Firebaugh, with Nicole Marchese’s 14 points leading the way. Guard Elena Erreca added 13.

The Tigers opened the tournament with a 68-37 rout of Dos Palos on the strength of 30 points from Jacquelin Arretche. The senior was 9-of-22 from the field, with a pair of 3-pointers and 7 free throws. Nicole Marchese scored 34 points in the three games, and made the all-tournament team.

Pacheco hit the consolation bracket of the Alisal tournament after opening with a 48-28 loss to Burlingame, the defending Central Coast Section Division 3 champion. Sam Rodriguez scored almost half of Pacheco points, with 13. Burlingame dropped its semifinal game against tournament host Alisal, which went on to defeat Salinas 33-31 in the tournament championship.

After the King City loss, Pacheco finished the tournament with a 47-26 win over Harbor-Santa Cruz, with Maggie Morales and Vanessa Guzman each scoring 13.

Both Los Banos and Pacheco dropped nonleague road contests on Tuesday, with Los Banos falling 47-34 to Merced, and Pacheco dropping a 45-38 loss to Le Grand.

Pacheco at Bear Creek

Pacheco took a contingent of varsity wrestlers to the Bear Creek Invitational over the weekend in Stockton, with several Panthers placing.

Leon Palao III made it to the championship match at 106 pounds, where Bella Vista’s Josh Elder pinned him in 1:17 minutes. Javier Gonzalez also made the championship match at 195 pounds, where Isaiah Washington of Florin High won by technical fall.

Josh Tui wrestled back to make the 220-pound third-place match. He finished fourth after D’Juan Ewing-Smalls of McClatchy beat him 10-7.

The Bear Creek Invitational featured girls brackets as well, and Pacheco’s Myrande Velasquez and Taryn Mitchell both placed third.

Pacheco hosts a JV boys and varsity girls tournament this Saturday.

Los Banos‘ varsity squad finished fifth at the Fehlman/Baxter Duals in Hollister. The JV team place third.
