Help for veterans

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9946, 1390 Broadway, has been serving the needs of veterans and their families for more than 62 years and welcomes any veteran whose service included combat or a combat operation. The group serves veterans and the city through several programs. It also can assist veterans in receiving any benefits connected to their service. Call (209) 358-7724.

‘Blue Christmas’ service

Many people are grieving and find it hard to put that sadness aside to get into the holiday spirit. There is a place that helps keep sadness and grief from feeling awkward and unwelcome. A ‘Blue Christmas’ service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Merced United Methodist Church, 899 Yosemite Pkwy.

SPCA meeting

The Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 500 Buena Vista Drive. Call (209) 723-8953 or (209) 384-7722.

‘A Christmas Carol’

Winter Wonderland

The Calaveras Big Trees Association will hold its Winter Wonderlandt, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 27. Activities include a scenic wagon ride inside the park, crafts for kids, music, hot cocoa, apple cider and cookies. Tickets are $12.50 for adults, and $8.50 for children under 12. New Year’s Eve dance

Club Mercedes will hold a New Year’s Eve dance from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 569 W. Ninth St. The Fresno band Force ‘Em will play. $15 per person. Must be 21 or older. Full beverage bar and snack bar. Call (209) 383-9906.
