Controlling codependency

CoDA is a 12-step program that helps codependent people have healthy and loving relationships. The group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at 500 Buena Vista Drive in the First Baptist Church administration building.

Benefit for ball teams

The Swingin’ New Year 2014 Dinner and Dance to benefit Le Grand High School softball and baseball teams will be held at the Le Grand American Legion Hall on Dec. 31. The event begins at 6 p.m. with no-host cocktails available. Dinner is at 7 p.m. followed by a live auction. Dancing starts at 9 p.m. You must be 21 years or older to attend. Tickets are $25 and are available from head softball coach Gia Priddell and head baseball coach Aaron Martinez or by calling (209) 389-9400.

New Year’s Eve bash

Celebrate with the Twi’ Lighters from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve at the Merced American Legion Hall, 939 W. Main St. Music will include Latin, country, salsa and old-school. Limo transportation will be available from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., one-way only. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For more information, call (209) 626-6105 or (209) 356-8676.

Club Mercedes dance

Club Mercedes will hold a New Year’s Eve Dance from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 569 W. 9th St. The Fresno band Force ‘Em will play. The cost is $15 per person, and people must be 21 years old or older to enter. A full beverage bar and snack bar will be open for purchases. Call (209) 383-9906.

Japanese rice pounding

The United Methodist Church will hold its annual mochi tsuki event on Saturday, when people will gather for the traditional rice pounding. Sales will only be by advance order. The price will be $4 per pound for plain mochi and $1.50 each for ahn mochi. Orders can be placed by calling the church office at (209) 394-2264 between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Monday through Friday. All orders should be made before Dec. 27 and will be ready to pick up from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 28 in the Pioneer Hall. Those who cannot pick up their order by 4 p.m. can notify the office that someone else will be picking it up. Mochi tsuki is a window into Japanese tradition, and those who would like to observe will be welcome. The best time to see everything in full swing is about 10 a.m. Saturday.

Social dance at ballroom

A social dance with music by Just Friends will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Merced Community Center ballroom, 755 W. 15th St. Doors will open at 1 p.m. The cost is $8. For more information, call (209) 723-0839.
