MERCED COUNTY — December is a month for giving, and high school students in Merced and Atwater got into the spirit by fulfilling the wishes of a number of students.
Atwater, Buhach Colony, Merced and Golden Valley high schools each held versions of winter wishes rally in early December. The events were spearheaded by leadership students and donations from area individuals and businesses.
At Atwater High, 45 wishes were granted during the “Miracles Do Happen” rally. Twenty-seven donors contributed about $10,000 to make the wishes come true. In many cases, students wished something special for family members. Atwater High custodians were even treated to a meal at a local restaurant.
At Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, 39 wishes representing more than $5,000 in donations from 27 individuals and businesses were fulfilled.
And at Merced’s Golden Valley High School, 28 wishes were granted at the rally. Leadership students began seeking student wishes and receiving donations from the community soon after school resumed in August.
Merced High School’s Winter Wishes Rally saw 40 wishes granted during two assemblies. More than $2,500 was raised, along with a separate staff auction that brought in another $1,500. A “penny wars” competition saw another $500 contributed to the cause.
