Sunrise Toastmasters

The Sunrise Toastmasters Club meets at 6:30 a.m. every Friday at Carrows Restaurant, 720 Motel Drive. New members are always welcome. For more information, call (209) 384-7128 or (209) 756-3001.

Food bank masquerade

Merced County Food Bank will have a fundraising masquerade ball titled “Hunger Has No Face.” There will be wine, cheese and appetizer tasting with a raffle and live music from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tuesday at Playhouse Merced, 452 W. Main St. Ticket price is $30 per person. Tickets include midnight champagne or apple cider toast, breakfast table and auction. To purchase tickets, call (209) 726-3663. Masks are optional and will be available for purchase. A sober ride home will also be provided.

Reading Society meeting

Merced Reading Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Barnes & Noble on Olive Avenue. The group will discuss “The Bostonian” by Henry James. To join or for more information, call (209) 725-1868.

Scholarship applications

Bloss scholarship applications are available to seniors and graduates of the Merced Union High School District who plan to attend an accredited California college or vocational school. Applicants must have graduated from the district in June 1973 or after. Applications are available at the high schools or at www.muhsd.k12.ca.us. Click on “departments,” then “college and scholarship info.” Completed applications and official transcripts are due by March 18. Volunteer drivers needed

If you are looking to help our veterans, the Disabled American Veterans organization is looking for men and women to be DAV volunteer drivers. Volunteering to drive a vet ensures that even those living far from Veterans Administration medical facilities can make their appointments and receive the treatment they need. DAV needs volunteers in the Merced area. The organization provides the van and fuel. Call (559) 241-6424 or (559) 225-6100, ext. 6907.

Menudo Sundays

Club Mercedes will serve menudo every Sunday through the NFL season at the club; doors open at 8 a.m. and close at noon or when the menudo runs out. Cost is $7 for a small bowl, or $8 for a large bowl. Beverages are available for purchase. Call (209) 383-9906.
