Greenville, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Z. Mason led the way with 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Chattanooga Mocs defeated the Furman Paladins, 72-63, in the Southern Conference opener for both clubs at Timmons Arena.
Casey Jones also posted a double-double for the Mocs (7-8, 1-0 SoCon) with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Ronrico White also added 13 points and Gee McGhee chipped in with 11 points.
For the Paladins (6-8, 0-1), Stephen Croone finished with 19 points, Kendrec Ferrara added 13 points and Larry Wideman scored 10.
Chattanooga shot just 33.3 percent from the field to start the game but did make 4-of-14 from 3-point range in the half, as the Mocs took a slim lead at the break, 30-29. Furman made 42.9 percent of its field goal tries in the half but missed all but one of its seven 3-point attempts before halftime.
After halftime, the Mocs shot 42.9 percent from the field and the Paladins shot 44.8 percent. Both squads hit on 2-of-7 from 3-point range in the second half. Chattanooga took the lead for good early in the second and was able to pull away for the win by hitting 10-of-15 from the free-throw line.
The Mocs were able to convert 23 offensive rebounds into 17 second chance points. Chattanooga finished the game with a 46-37 rebounding advantage.
