I am a respiratory therapist who also has asthma. I am imploring everyone who thinks its OK to burn in your fireplaces during this very bad air-quality period to please stop! You are placing people like me in danger of having a major asthma attack.
I am not being overly dramatic; I am telling you that the act of burning wood in a fireplace is placing my life and many others in danger. I had not used an inhaler in five years until December. Since then I have used my inhaler at least three or four days every week.
I am not the only one. Many people in Merced have pulmonary issues and are suffering due to bad air quality; you are making it worse by burning wood. My quality of life has suffered because of our air quality, but those who burn wood are contributing greatly to my health issues.
The Ragsdale neighborhood in particular does not follow the rules on wood burning. I doubt anyone there has a wood stove or fireplace as their only source of heat. If so, youre burning legally; otherwise you are violating the law and inflicting harm on those of us who have breathing problems. Its up to you to be thoughtful and follow the law. Dont burn!
