Speech contest scheduled

United for Life of Merced County’s annual pro-life speech contest will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Merced Civic Center, Sam Pipes Room. The contest is open to high school-age students throughout Merced County. Applications are now available and due by Feb. 22. Tax assistants sought

Open house to aid horses

The Wayward Ponies’ Home. a small equine sanctuary in Catheys Valley, will hold its fifth annual open house from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 8, rain or shine. Admission, refreshments, children’s activities and one raffle ticket toward a gate prize are free. There will be a $20 potluck-style raffle, in which each ticket buyer is guaranteed a pot full of prizes worth $50 or more. This year’s theme is science, and young people can compete for cash prizes by finding clues in descriptions of experiments on horses. The sanctuary needs donations of new, prize-worthy items and decent-looking pots with lids. Donations are tax-deductible. Museum seeks docents

The Merced County Courthouse Museum is recruiting new volunteers. Docents serve as tour guides for visitors to the Courthouse Museum and help to educate the public about Merced County history. An annual docent-training session is scheduled at 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Courthouse Museum. Experience or knowledge of the history of Merced County is not required; docent training will be provided. Teachers are encouraged to participate so they can use the museum for their classes. For more information, call (209) 723-2401.

Indoor soccer offered

The Merced Recreation Department and the Merced Indoor Sports Center will be offering a second session of indoor soccer on Saturday’s for kids ages 3 to 10. The cost is $35, plus a $10 uniform fee, and the league will begin on Feb. 22. Register at Aguilera’s Satellites, 1033 W. Main St. by Feb. 1.
