A month-long residential burglary investigation ended Thursday in Dos Palos with a suspected gang member behind bars, the Merced County Sheriffs Department reported.
Gilberto Cortez, 18, was booked at the Merced County jail on suspicion of burglary. Bail was set at $50,000, according to jail records.
Sheriffs deputies served a search warrant early Thursday at Cortezs apartment in the 21000 block of Reynolds Avenue, Deputy Delray Shelton said.
Detective Roberto Torres, the lead investigator in the case, identified Cortez as a possible suspect in a Dec. 2 break-in at a home in the 2200 block of Sixth Street in Dos Palos, Shelton said.
Deputies declined to say exactly how Cortez was identified as a suspect in the case.
Investigators said a burglar forced his way into the Sixth Street home through a back door and took several items, including a television.
During the service of the search warrant, the deputies were able to recover the television believed to have been stolen from the victims home, Shelton said.
Cortez and several family members arrived home as the deputies were searching the apartment, Shelton said. Cortez was taken into custody without incident.
