The Buzz: Health care coverage covered on YouTube

Covered California’s “Tell a friend, get covered” campaign to draw attention to the Affordable Care Act got a boost last week when a host of celebrities and athletes participated in an hourslong YouTube promotion.

The effort, which put an at-times-entertaining spin on the “hows and whys of how to get covered,” included six hours of live streaming online with social media interaction using the #getcovered hashtag.

At one point in the marathon production, a host urged viewers to submit their favorite movie titles incorporating health, using the example #AmericanMuscle.

The goal is to boost the number of young people signing up on exchange plans.

In a recorded skit, Olivia Wilde is read a rapid-fire list of facts by comedian Billy Eichner and instructed to tell the audience whether they relate to the new health care law. If so, she was to shout “Obamacare” and if not, she was told to repeat the phrase “Shut up!”

“I can’t stop binge-watching ‘Orange is the New Black,’ ” Eichner says.

“Shut up!” goes the reply.

“If you can’t afford it, the government will actually give you money to help pay for it,” he says.

“Obamacare!” she replies.

And … you get the point.

Neel Kashkari, expected to announce his campaign for governor at any moment, is scheduled today to give his first speech since leaving his job at Newport Beach-based Pacific Investment Co. a year ago. He will deliver the keynote address at a business luncheon at California State University, Sacramento.
