Madera woman killed in Hwy. 99 collision

A 62-year-old Madera woman was killed when her vehicle collided with a big rig on Highway 99 in Madera County, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

The crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. Monday as the woman was driving south on the freeway near Avenue 24 in a Hyundai. Truck driver Ty Bailey, 41, of Val Verde, also was heading south in the southbound lane in a Peterbilt tractor-trailer.

According to the CHP, the Hyundai hit the Peterbilt and then ran off the road, hitting a tree.

The woman, whose name was not released pending notification of her family, died at the scene, the CHP reported. A 58-year-old female passenger, Josephine Amaro of Madera, suffered major injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Madera. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
