A 25-year-old Winton man died during the weekend after being struck by a train in an apparent suicide, the Merced County Coroner’s Office reported.

The incident was reported at 10:50 p.m. Saturday and occurred on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks, east of Winton Way, near California Street in Winton, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputy Delray Shelton said the man apparently walked in front of the oncoming train and was struck. The case remains under investigation, but authorities believe the man intended to commit suicide.

Sheriff’s deputies remained on the scene for several hours examining evidence.

A man wearing headphones died Dec. 20 while walking on the tracks near Santa Fe Avenue near McKee and Keely roads.
