13 cited, one arrested after Merced County Sheriff’s deputies break up Hilmar cockfight

January 27, 2014

— A cockfight in the Hilmar area Saturday night came to an end after being broken up by Merced County Sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies responded around 10 p.m. to the 2300 block of August Avenue after receiving calls about a cockfight happening at the location. Deputies arrived and found about 80 vehicles parked at the location, according to Deputy Delray Shelton, sheriff’s spokesman.

Deputies searched the area and spotted around 100 people attending the cockfight. Most of the attendees fled the scene after seeing law enforcement. Deputies detained, cited and released 13 people. One person was booked into the jail for cock-fighting after he refused to cooperate with deputies, Shelton said.

Deputies found between 300 and 400 roosters, and the birds were taken by Merced County Animal Control.

Deputies also found a cockfighting ring and betting sheets at the scene.
