Atwater citizens voted in good faith to approve Measure H, a tax increase to pay for more police on the streets. City leaders promised to ensure the money was properly accounted for. They assured us an oversight committee would watch carefully over the money.
Now, we learn the committee is akin to a rogue group of hand-picked individuals who seem baffled that they have been exposed for deliberately flouting the Brown Act. We hear excuses that no police can be hired without equipment. Yet five fully equipped police cars were recently leased, all for $50,000 a year.
The City Council needs to step in, take control from city officials who are neglecting safety and violating the law. This is turning into oversight-gate!
