78-year-old Mariposa man killed in Highway 140 collision

January 30, 2014

A 78-year-old Mariposa man was killed in a crash on Highway 140 earlier this week, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

The man, whose name has not been released, was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer west about 3:44 p.m. Tuesday on the highway south of Grosjean Road, officers said.

Beverly Slaght, 82, of Mariposa was headed the opposite direction on Highway 140 in a 1991 Ford Explorer.

Authorities said they do not know how fast the cars were moving when the 78-year-old man’s vehicle drifted to the left and collided head-on with Slaght’s vehicle, officers said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body taken to the Mariposa County coroner.

Officers said Slaght was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.

Authorities said the collision remains under investigation.
