State College, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - D.J. Newbill scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Penn State Nittany Lions claimed a 79-68 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Ten Conference action at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Nittany Lions (12-10, 3-6 Big Ten), winners of three in a row, were Tim Frazier and Brandon Taylor with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Frazier, who shot a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line, added five rebounds and five assists, while Taylor pulled down a team- high eight boards.
The Boilermakers (13-9, 3-6) were led by A.J. Hammons who registered a double- double with 18 points and 12 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Ronnie Johnson tacked on 12 points and Terone Johnson 10 as the team fell for the fourth time in as many outings.
Purdue used an early 14-4 run to post a seven-point advantage in the first half and while the visitors converted 55.6 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action, it was PSU that moved out to a 34-29 edge at the break.
In the second half the Boilermakers fell to just 36.6 percent accuracy from the field, while the Nittany Lions hovered in the same area at 37.9 percent. However, Penn State did outscore Purdue at the free-throw line in the period by a lopsided 22-6 margin, allowing the hosts to capture the win.
The Nittany Lions led by as many as 11 points in the meeting, the same margin the program held at the charity stripe, 26-15.
