70-year-old man robbed in Atwater

A 70-year-old man was robbed Sunday after withdrawing money from an ATM in the Atwater area, police reported.

The incident happened at 6:18 p.m. in the 1600 block of Bellevue Drive, according to Lt. Sam Joseph.

The victim had retrieved $60 from the ATM and noticed he was being followed by someone wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. The victim turned around to confront the person, then tried to kick him,, but was not successful. The robber wrestled the victim to the ground and took his wallet. The robber was last seen leaving the area in a silver or gray Mercury Marquis or similar vehicle.

Joseph said detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras in the area. The victim did not suffer physical injuries from the attack.

The robber is described as a Latino man, about 5-feet-9 inches tall, weighing about 135 pounds.
