Regarding “Where is oversight?” (Letters, Jan. 31), the writer complained about a lack of oversight for Atwater’s Measure H sales tax for public safety. His next-to-last sentence shows a complete lack of knowledge about how Measure H works. He wrote “The City Council needs to step in, take control from city officials who are neglecting safety and violating the law.”
The ordinance and the measure clearly states that the expenditure of Measure H taxes collected are the responsibility of the City Council subject to the Measure H restrictions. The taxes collected are to go toward public safety and must supplement, not supplant, city expenditures in effect when the measure was passed. The sole charge of the oversight committee is to verify that the Measure H funds are expended according to the ordinance. It is interesting to note that the few complainers about Measure H seem to forget that the city manager is also the police chief. The detractors seem to think they know more about public safety than the police chief?
