Re the letter Where is oversight (Jan. 31) in Atwater: The writer said the committee is akin to a rogue group of handpicked individuals who seem baffled that they have been exposed for deliberately flouting the Brown Act. Not truthful.
After an open recruitment and selection process, 10 Atwater citizens were appointed to the Measure H Oversight Committee by the city manager, as authorized by Ordinance CS 937.
Members include: one in the insurance business; an employee of the federal government; one in flight training at Castle Airport; one in family business; a retired U.S. Air Force veteran; another business member; one in elementary education; a past City Council member; a minister at an Atwater Church; a family member of past sheriff of Merced County.
An oversight committee meeting was scheduled for Feb. 6. Four city officials were to give their reports. However, the oversight meeting was canceled because a council member at the last council meeting asked for a verbal report from the city attorney. If the writer of the previous letter has questions, he should call for an appointment at City Hall. Any questions will be answered. Also, no law was violated and safety is a priority.
