Regarding Oversight is in place (Letters, Feb. 8) in Atwater: The author appears to be unaware of the content of Ordinance CS 937, governing the voter-approved safety tax, which clearly states the oversight committee will consist of five members, not 10, and its meetings must be noticed and open to the public. To date, no meeting has ever been open to the public.
The sole purpose of the committee is to insure that funds are spent on safety and, as the city attorney stated, the committee has no authority to make recommendations as to its use.
Yet the oversight committee chairperson publicly recommended spending up to $1 million for a snorkel fire truck even though there are no buildings over two stories.
Atwaters most neglected need is more police on the streets fighting crime. Our citizens are not well-served by an inept committee whose hallmark is confusion, bickering and constant infighting.
