Sweetheart Gala

Merced Area Council of Beta Sigma Phi will have its annual Sweetheart Gala on Feb. 22 at Gateway Gardens, 18th and M St. Cocktail hour is at 6 p.m., and dinner at 7. Tickets are $42 each. This year’s theme is Jewels of the Nile. For more information, call (209) 394-3509.

Merced Symphony chamber concert

The Merced Symphony’s annual chamber concert is March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St. Divertissement, composed of renowned musicians, is the featured group. Tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for full-time students. Tickets can be purchased at the arts center, Merced Floral, Christina’s Fine Clothing, Big O Tires and Gold Smith Jewelers in Atwater. Saturday of Service

The first Saturday in March each year is designated as Saturday of Service for Soroptimists around the world. This is the date that Soroptimists everywhere do a service project for their community. For nine years Soroptimist of Merced has worked at the Merced County Public Library cleaning. They will clean shelves, books, tables, toys in the Little Theater, furniture and computer keyboards. They also will cut out arts and crafts projects for children to use this summer. The work will be done from 9 a.m. to noon March 1.

Mature driver improvement classes

The Merced College Office of Continuing Education will have mature driver improvement classes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 at the Merced Tri-College Center, Building 5. Many insurance companies offer discounts to drivers age 50 and older who complete this course. The eight-hour course will include classroom instruction on driver safety, how the effects of aging can impair driving ability, how to prevent or offset hazardous conditions and road courtesy. There will be discussions on how to improve driving performance and updates about rules, laws and equipment. No registration fee. Call the Continuing Education Program at (209) 381-6540 to register as seating is limited.

Chicken dinner

RWC’s Finger Lickin’ Chicken Dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at New Faith Tabernacle Christian Church, 208 E. 10th St. The event will help raise money for the young adults of Merced County to put on a workshop. Tickets are $8. For more information, call (209) 658-6019.
