Merced County Fair officials announced this week that The Marshall Tucker Band will perform at 8:30 p.m. June 12 at the fairgrounds’ Outdoor Theater.

The Marshall Tucker Band’s hit singles include “Heard It In a Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain,” “Can’t You See” and “Take The Highway,” according to a fair news release.

The Marshall Tucker Band started in 1973 and recently released its “Greatest Hits” album in traditional vinyl form. The band opened shows for The Allman Brothers and later influenced major country acts including Alabama and Travis Tritt. The Marshall Tucker Band has continued to win over new generations of fans and satisfy the band’s longtime fans, as the original members have died or retired, the release said.

Current band members are drummer B.B. Borden, a former member of both Mother’s Finest and The Outlaws; Marcus Henderson, who plays flute, saxophone and keyboards in addition to lead and background vocals. Pat Elwood is on bass guitar, Rick Willis plays lead guitar and sings and Chris Hicks plays lead guitar.

The band started in Spartanburg, S.C., and borrowed their name from a piano tuner, whose name was found on a key ring in their old rehearsal space. They went on to earn seven gold and three platinum albums. During the ’90s they scored four hit singles on Billboard’s country charts and one on Billboard’s gospel chart, the release said.

The group is led by founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray.

Christian music artist Lincoln Brewster, a guitarist and songwriter who played lead guitar for Steve Perry of Journey fame, will perform on the fair’s opening day, June 11, at 8:30 p.m.

Admission to the Merced County Fair is $5. Children 5 and under will get in free. Seniors 65 and older will be admitted free on opening day. Mercy Medical Center Seniors Day and Kids’ Day be June 12. All children 12 and younger get in free on that day only. New this year is “Free ’Til 3” on June 15, when general admission is free for everyone until 3 p.m.

The remaining entertainment lineup for the fair’s June 11-15 run will be announced soon. All concerts are free with admission.
