A 41-year-old man is behind bars, accused of trying to smuggle marijuana into Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to the women’s prison Sunday afternoon, where William “Bill” Leroy Waltz of Burlington, Mich., was being detained after correctional guards caught him with the contraband, officials said.
Deputies discovered that Waltz, who recently married one of the inmates, is a sex offender and is wanted in Michigan for being out of compliance.
Waltz reportedly knew he was wanted in Michigan but since he now resides in California, he didn’t think it was necessary to register here. When asked if he had been apprised of the requirements of being a sex registrant, Waltz claimed it was so long ago that he forgot, officials said.
Waltz was booked at the Madera County Department of Corrections where his bail was set at $25,000.
