FRESNO — The investigation into a collision last year that claimed the life of a 60-year-old Planada man continued this week, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Hubertino Vallejo was killed Nov. 20, 2013, in the area of R and 14th streets when he was struck by a Merced Police Department armored SWAT vehicle, investigators have previously said.
Officer Moises Onsurez said it remains unclear when the investigation could be completed.
Onsurez said Monday that the investigation is being done by the CHPs Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team out of Fresno.
Theyre still reviewing physical evidence from the scene and conducting a very through investigation, Onsurez said.
MAIT handles larger, more complicated or major collisions that typically take several months or more to complete, according to the CHP.
The CHP said Vallejo was walking south on the east sidewalk of R Street moments before the collision and the SWAT vehicle was heading north on R Street in the right lane.
The SWAT vehicle struck Vallejo about 4:50 p.m. during a heavy rainstorm that investigators said significantly hampered visibility.
It remains unclear whether Vallejo had walked into the road or if he was on the sidewalk.
The CHP said the officers stopped near where Vallejo was struck, and began to administer first aid. Vallejo was found in the road or the bike lane. He was struck by the right side of the vehicle, near a ladder that sticks out several inches.
Eight officers were inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. They were returning to the station after a day of training out of town, the Merced Police Department reported.
