One of T.J. Moore’s ultimate goals when he started playing football was to earn a college scholarship.
The Golden Valley senior reached that goal last week when he accepted a scholarship to play football at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
“That was the goal when I started playing football and I fell in love with the game,” Moore said. “I can’t imagine not playing anymore.”
The 6-foot-5, 375-pound offensive tackle was a first-team all-Central California Conference selection this fall.
“They made a good choice in T.J.,” Golden Valley head coach Dennis Stubbs said. “I think his best football is ahead of him. He’s very athletic for his size. When he fully grows into his body I think they’ll be happy.”
Moore had attracted interest from a number of Division 3 colleges. The William Jewell coaches contacted him about two months ago and that eventually led up to his visit to campus last week.
“I felt the opportunity was too good to pass up,” Moore said. “I really like the coaches and players I met. The coaches are laid back. I like that it’s a smaller school so there’s opportunity for more one-on-one teaching. It’s a partial scholarship, but they’re covering a good chunk of everything.”
Moore was born and raised in Merced but will have family nearby when goes away to school. He has a brother and sister who live in Nebraska and he has other family who live 15 minutes away in Kansas City.
“I’m willing to experience a different part of the country,” Moore said. “I’m ready to do my own thing and start my own life.”
After watching Moore develop the past two seasons, Stubbs isn’t surprised he reached his goal.
“His priorities were always set,” Stubbs said. “This was his goal. He really wanted to sign somewhere for a scholarship. Now it happened. He worked himself into that. You could always count on him. He was always in the weight room. He never missed a game, even when he was banged up. He worked hard for this. I’m really happy for him.”
