LOS BANOS -- High school seniors who have a passion for volunteerism still have time to apply for the June Erreca Scholarship.
The “Honoring the Heart of Volunteering” award is headed by Soroptimist International of Los Banos.
Organizers said this year is meaningful because it will be the first time the award will be given as a way to honor Erreca’s life. The Los Banos businesswoman, who headed the scholarship, passed away last year. “The (Erreca) family designated that contributions be made to the club in her name. So this past year we started a separate account just for this award,” said Tina Bohr, treasurer.
Organizers said the scholarship is awarded to someone who, over the course of their high school career, has volunteered throughout the community either through an established nonprofit or has instituted a program of service.
“Up to this year June has been active in the choosing of the award winners,” Bohr said.
The winning applicant will recieve $500 that can be used as is. Applicants must be a senior in high school but the award is not based upon a GPA status. Candidates can pick up an application at either of the three Los Banos high schools; Pacheco High School, Los Banos High School and San Luis High School. Winning applicants will be notified by April 18 and will be recognized at the annual Soroptimist Awards Banquet in May.
“It means that her tradition of volunteering is going to continue. She was a huge volunteer in the community not only for Soroptimist but for many organizations,” Bohr added.
