Police got word of an armed robbery early Sunday at a Valero gas station in Merced, they said.

The incident was reported at 4:25 a.m. at the 1107 W. Olive Ave. station.

Police said the 27-year-old female store clerk told them that the lone robber entered the station, pointed a handgun at her and demanded a gold chain she was wearing.

The clerk tried to give the robber change from the register, but he lunged at her and ripped the gold chain from around her neck, police said. He fled on foot with the jewelry.

Police said the robber remains at large. He was described as a black man wearing black clothes and a red bandana on his face.

Police are asking anyone with information about the robbery to call Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702 or the department’s automated tip line at (209) 385-4725. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
