A man who was fatally shot in Merced on Saturday has been identified as Genaro Serrato Mendoza, 62, according to the Merced County Coroner’s Office.

Details about Serrato’s death are still sketchy, and officials at the coroner’s office said they had worked with the Mexican Consulate to confirm the victim’s identity.

Merced Police Capt. Tom Trindad said police are pursuing various leads, although detectives are not releasing additional details at this time.

The victim was found shot numerous times about 8:51 p.m. Saturday on a neighbor’s porch in the 400 block of West 12th Street.

Police said Serrato lived in an apartment two doors away from where his body was found. He died at an area hospital about an hour after he was found, despite efforts by police officers and paramedics at the scene to stabilize him.

Saturday’s death marks the sixth homicide of 2014 in Merced County and the third in the city of Merced.
