A Merced Sun-Star reporter was arrested early Thursday morning on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol.

An officer was patrolling downtown Merced at 12:35 a.m. when he noticed Thaddeus Miller, 33, driving his 2011 Kia Soul with his headlights off, according to Sgt. Shane Ferriera.

The officer pulled over Miller’s vehicle in the area of M Street and Northwood Drive. Ferriera said the officer could smell an alcoholic beverage on Miller’s breath.

After conducting an investigation, the officer determined Miller was driving under the influence.

A sample of Miller’s blood was taken, although Ferriera said the results of that test have not been released.

Miller was booked at the Merced County jail at 1:45 a.m. and released later Thursday.

Miller covers the city of Merced for the Sun-Star, and has worked for the newspaper since June 2013.
