Workers dismantle the eastern span of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge in this view from Yerba Buena Island Friday.

BEN MARGOT — The Associated Press

Demolition crews remove the upper road deck of the retired eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Friday.

The bridge is being taken down in roughly the reverse order of its construction in the mid-1930s, an expected three-year, $239 million process.

Once enough of the road deck is removed, the truss work will be disconnected at midspan and dismantled.

Delays are holding up the connection of the new span’s bike and pedestrian pathway to Yerba Buena Island. It is now expected in summer 2015.
