A small private plane crashed Friday morning in Mariposa County, killing at least one person, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Deputies at 10:10 a.m. responded to a call of a possible plane crash in the 6000 block of Highway 49 north, not far from the Mariposa-Yosemite Airport.

A sheriff's fixed-wing aircraft and a California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the downed plane in a rugged area off the highway. No details were immediately available on what may have caused the crash.

First responders reached the crash site just after 11:45 a.m. Deputies said investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration had been notified and would investigate the case.

The name of the person who died in the crash has not been released, pending notification of family.
