A 29-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds Wednesday afternoon in Delhi, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The victim, whose name was not released for safety reasons, was shot “more than once,” Deputy Delray Shelton said. The exact number of wounds was not disclosed.
He was flown to a regional hospital and is expected to recover, Shelton said.
Deputies received numerous 911 calls at 12:37 p.m. in the area of the 16000 block of August Avenue in Delhi.
Sheriff’s investigators described the attack as a “possible drive-by” shooting, but said the victim has refused to cooperate with detectives.
No arrests have been made and no suspect or vehicle descriptions were available Wednesday.
Shelton said the motive for the shooting remains unclear. He said investigators have not ruled out possible gang or drug connections in the case.
The shooting occurred in the same area where another possible drive-by shooting was reported last month. A 17-year-old boy was shot multiple times March 8 in the area of Countryside and August avenues in Delhi. The teenager’s injuries were not life-threatening, deputies said.
A shooter was seated inside a black and orange SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe. No arrests have been made, deputies said.
Investigators said it was still too early in the investigation to know whether there are any connections between the two cases.
