A 29-year-old Merced woman died Thursday in a head-on collision on Franklin Road, southeast of Atwater, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The woman’s name was not released pending notification of her family.

Officer Moises Onsurez said the woman was driving a silver 2001 Toyota Corolla around 11:40 a.m. south on Franklin Road at an undetermined speed. For unknown reasons, the woman “lost control” of the vehicle north of Cardella Road and moved into the oncoming lane of traffic, the CHP said.

Her vehicle collided into a 2011 Toyota Camry driven by 20-year-old Harpreet Atwal. The Corolla continued off the roadway and overturned. Atwal and his passenger, 23-year-old Veerdeep Kaur, both Livingston residents, complained of pain and were taken to an area hospital.

The woman who was driving the Corolla was pronounced dead a shortly after the crash, the CHP said.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation late Wednesday.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help to determine what may have caused the fatal crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP’s Atwater office at (209) 356-2958.
