Shots fired at Merced pedestrian

A man in a gray car opened fire on a pedestrian Tuesday afternoon on Loughborough Drive before speeding away, the Merced Police Department reported.

The suspected target, described by witnesses only as an “African American male,” fled the scene on foot and has not come forward to speak with police. It was unclear if the man was injured, Capt. Tom Trindad said in a news release.

Officers received reports around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday of numerous shots fired on Loughborough at Meadows Avenue. It was unclear exactly how many shots were fired.

Investigators learned two men in a gray vehicle stopped along the road and one of the suspects opened fire with an undisclosed type of firearm. The vehicle left the area in an undetermined direction, police said. Officers don’t have detailed descriptions of the suspects.

“The motive behind the shooting is not clear at this time,” Trindad said.
