Derek Carlon: Keep our water here

June 2, 2014

Picture 3,000 football fields all covered in 7 feet of water. That is roughly how much water Steve Sloan and Steve Smith want to take out of Merced County each year for the next four years. That’s 12,000 football fields covered in 7 feet of water. City of Merced residents have stricter watering rules than Patterson, Newman, Gustine, Ripon, Ceres, Modesto, Riverbank and Oakdale. Yet Merced County is going to allow all that water go to Stanislaus County?

We don’t even know how much groundwater we have exactly. What is going to happen to our water bills if extremely expensive drilling has to be done to extend our water wells? Our water bills are going to soar. What will happen to all of our farms, ranches and local businesses who completely rely on affordable water? They are going to be devastated.

But Stanislaus County farmers will be doing fine or at least much better than us. Sloan and Smith are out of control. These two men and their associates are going to devastate this county if we do not have enough groundwater.
