A man died early Friday after he was struck by a train in Merced, the Merced County Coroners Office confirmed.
The victims identity was not known Friday, Merced County sheriffs Deputy Delray Shelton said.
Deputies responded at 5:05 a.m. to the railroad tracks at Highway 59 and Santa Fe Avenue in Merced to investigate a report of a man who was struck by a freight train, Shelton said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
How the man came to be on the railroad tracks was unclear and remained under investigation Friday evening.
