High school all-star games this weekend

It’s all-star weekend for area high school athletes with all-star football and baseball games taking place on Saturday.

The Merced County All-Star Baseball Game will be held at Merced College on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The South team will be comprised of players from Merced, Golden Valley, Dos Palos and Le Grand. The North will have players from Hilmar, Buhach Colony, Atwater, Livingston, Los Banos, Gustine and Mariposa.

Coaching the North is Merced’s Keith Petiti and Le Grand’s Todd Buchner, and coaching the South are Hilmar’s Justin Steelman and Mariposa’s Bruce Vegely, who is retiring after this season.

Players who are selected to their respective all-conference first or second teams are eligible to play in the game.

Twenty players from this game will be picked to represent Merced County in a game against Stanislaus County all-stars on June 21 at Merced College at 7 p.m.

The 41st Annual Central California Lions All-Star Football Classic will also be held on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Tracy High.

The game will feature 12 local players, including Central California Conference MVP Travante Richard (Merced), Golden Valley’s Jashaan Wright and Atwater’s JoJo Ochoa.

Merced High’s Rob Scheidt will coach the South team.

Rotary game on deck

The 29th Annual North/South Rotary All-Star Football Game will be held on Friday, June 27 at Veterans Stadium on the campus of Golden Valley.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.

The North will be made up of players from the Sac-Joaquin Section. They’ll square off against the South, which will be all-stars from the Central Section.

Merced’s Scheidt will coach the North.

Suarez headed to Iowa

Dos Palos senior Izzac Suarez will wrestle at Luther College next year in Decorah, Iowa.

Luther College is a Division III school. Suarez will receive grant and financial aid that will help cover the cost of tuition.

Suarez went 1-2 at the CIF State Meet in March in the 152-pound division.

Costa hosting QB camp

Former Hilmar star and Oregon quarterback Nathan Costa is hosting a three-day high school quarterback camp July 7-9 at Hilmar High.

The times will be 5-7 p.m. on July 7 and 8 and 1-3 p.m. on July 9.
