Los Banos Tiger Sharks win Dos Palos dual

For the second week in a row, the Los Banos Tiger Sharks emerged victorious over the Dos Palos Dolphins swim team. The Los Banos club scored 1,344.5 points in Saturday’s dual meet, beating DP’s 1,024.5.

A number of Los Banos swimmers kept their low times going in the second week of the summer swim season, with Brooklyn Gallagher winning all four of her events (15.95 seconds in the 7-8-year-old 25-yard freestyle, 23.01 in the 25-yard breaststroke, 20.19 in the 25-yard butterfly and 37.10 in the 50-yard freestyle).

The Tiger Sharks also had three swimmers win three events – Jared Benitez swam 24.58 seconds in the 15-18-year-old 50-yard freestyle, 1:04.60 in the 100-yard backstroke and 1:03.53 in the 100-yard butterfly, Irene Duke swam the girls 15-18-year-old 50-yard freestyle in 27.85 seconds, the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.93 and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:03.52, and Gannon Lemos won the 7-8-year-old boys 25-yard freestyle in 16.92 seconds, 25-yard butterfly in 21.00 and 50-yard freestyle in 39.56.

Two-event winners included Phillip Vander Poel in the 7-8-year-old 25-yard backstroke (25.20 seconds) and 25-yard breaststroke (24.31), Diego Soberanes in the 11-12-year-old boys 50-yard freestyle (29.29) and 50-yard butterfly (36.73), Erubey Martinez in the 13-14-year-old boys 50-yard freestyle (27.09) and 100-yard freestyle (1:03.34), and Paul Reyes picked up th event Benitez missed in the 15-18-year-old division, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.83) and 100-yard freestyle (56.14) while placing second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.37) and 100-yard butterfly (1:03.63).

Other notable Tiger Sharks included Brooke Torres, with a win and three second-place finishes in the 11-12-year-old girls division, Phillip Vander Poel with a win, two second-place finishes and a third-place finish in the 7-8-year-old boys division, John Paul Vander Poel with a win and two second-place finishes in the 9-10-year-old boys division, Anthony Vander Poel with a win and a pair of second-place finishes in the 11-12-year-old boys division, and Elissa Martinez with a win and a pair of second-place finishes in the 15-18-year-old girls division.

The Tiger Sharks will be back in action Saturday against Kerman and defending Merced County Swim League champion Hilmar. Swimming starts at 9 a.m.
