Sue Thompson: Protect groundwater

June 22, 2014

The articles and debates about orchard wells taking so much groundwater that domestic wells are drying up are very timely.

I, too, live in fear of my well drying up. To the north of me is a large orchard (which is owned by an investment group). This group plans to purchase a few acres next to me, put wells in and pump water over to their orchards, which are a mile away. The two properties do not even adjoin one another.

There are restrictions against transporting groundwater off land. We need to make these laws even stiffer.
