Merced police arrested a 51-year-old man Tuesday on suspicion of stealing a water meter.

Police say Thomas Buchanan was arrested after the stolen meter, valued at $4,000, was found during a search of his Shirley Street home.

The investigation began after Officer Leon Pintabona was sent to the Bradley Overpass to meet with employees of RWG Construction, who reported the stolen meter. The meter, owned by the city of Merced, was attached to a hydrant and was being used to provide water to the Bradley Overpass construction site, police said.

The officer followed up on leads and identified Buchanan as a suspect. During the search of Buchanan’s home, the stolen water meter was found inside his bedroom, police said.

Buchanan was arrested and booked into Merced County Jail.
