The time period for people to sign up for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act has been closed for more than two months now. However, those who qualify for Medi-Cal can enroll year round.
To ease this process, Building Healthy Communities and Golden Valley Health Centers will host a Medi-Cal enrollment workshop on Saturday at Le Grand High School, 12961 E. Le Grand Road.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Ten bilingual counselors and outreach specialists will be available to answer questions and enroll those who qualify.
Representatives from BHC and GVHC walked the streets of Le Grand on Wednesday passing out fliers to let residents know about Saturday’s enrollment event.
The door-to-door tactic is a way to reach out to people who otherwise would not attend outreach events, said Isai Palma, BHC’s administrative coordinator.
“In Le Grand we have a high population that’s low-income,” Palma said, “and many don’t realize that they can still apply for Medi-Cal.”
Palma said the outreach efforts will be expanding in coming months to the areas of Beachwood-Franklin, Dos Palos and Planada.
The event is set to address the questions of those who are eligible for Medi-Cal and may not know it. According to Palma, the goal is to get as many people as possible in the county enrolled in coverage now, before the second ACA open enrollment period rolls out in the fall. Open enrollment for coverage that starts in 2015 will run from Nov. 15 to Feb.15
