A Galt elementary school was placed on temporary lockdown Thursday after a report of shots fired in a nearby neighborhood, a school official said.
Karen Schauer, superintendent for the Galt Joint Union School District, said the Galt Police Department at 9:45 a.m. alerted the Lake Canyon Elementary School to lock down the site because gunshots were reported in the Grizzley Hollow area about a quarter-mile south of the campus.
The school is among campuses in the district that operates a Bright Future Learning Center program for children to participate in summer reading, check out books and receive a free lunch.
Schauer said only a handful of children and parents were in the center when the police notice came through. They remained in the center until the lock-down was lifted at 12:10 p.m. Lunch was canceled.
We got enough notice to make calls to parents, Schauer said. And so most children did not come.
The district, which serves 3,800 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, has five elementary campuses, a middle school and a pre-kindergarten school readiness center.
Schauer expressed disappointment in the disruption of lunch for the students.
Its wonderful to see these opportunities happen for children, she said. But an incident like this throws a wrench into it. However, we worked very well with the Galt Police Department.
Police were not immediately available to give details of the incident.
