Kathy Pon will be named interim superintendent of the Delhi Unified School District at the governing board’s July 8 meeting.

Pon, assistant superintendent for instructional services with the Merced County Office of Education, will replace Brian Stephens, who resigned to become the superintendent of the Tracy school system next month.

At their last session, trustees voted 5-2, with Brenda Saaverdra and Felipe Espino dissenting, to appoint Pon. Details of her contract will be approved during an executive session before the July board meeting.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges,” Pon said. “Delhi is a very strong district with very talented people there.”

Pon said she will be focused on preparing the school system for reopening this fall. She said the timeline for finding a replacement superintendent calls for having someone in place by mid-August.

Sometimes county schools offices will lend staff members out to temporarily fill such positions, Pon said. Her work on a per diem basis with Delhi will be contracted out by the Delhi district and county schools office.

Pon has been with MCOE for three years and has 34 years in education.
