Two injured in big Los Banos area crash

Two men suffered major injuries Wednesday in a crash involving up to five vehicles on Highway 152 near Los Banos, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Miguel Hernandez, 26, of Fresno, and Arthur Banks, 28, of Clovis, were rushed by helicopter to Modesto-area hospitals with unspecified major injuries, the CHP said in a news release.

A third person, Michall Bushell, 41, of North Port, Fla., had minor injuries, the CHP said.

The crash was reported around 10:44 a.m. on Highway 152 in Merced County east of Dinosaur Point, officers said.

Hernandez was driving east at about 65 to 70 mph when, for unknown reasons, his 2011 Chevrolet Aveo drove through the center median and into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane. Hernandez’s vehicle collided head-on with Banks’ 2007 GMC 2500, the CHP reported.

Hernandez’s vehicle then collided with the vehicle driving directly behind Banks, a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Nora Nichols of Milpitas. Nichols, 33, was not injured, authorities said.

Deshawn Alexis, 44, also of North Port, Fla., was driving west in a 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer big rig and was unable to avoid the collision, crashing into the guardrail before striking the GMC. Alexis was also uninjured, the CHP said.

Traffic on Highway 152 was slow for several hours, but both lanes reopened about 1 p.m., Officer Dean Emehiser confirmed.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected in the crash, the CHP said.
