Im surprised the Sun-Star hasnt said much about the recent increased drilling for oil in the San Joaquin Valley. Of course drilling for oil here isnt a recent thing, but the oil industrys use of extreme oil extraction methods such as hydraulic fracturing, more commonly called fracking, is. In addition to the huge quantities of water used in fracking, there is the large number of toxic chemicals added to the water to release the oil from the rock. The oil and gas are then released from thousands of feet under the ground, not only vertically but horizontally.
Since California is in a historic drought and fracking uses millions of gallons of water, Im particularly concerned about the impact of its use on our agriculture economy. It seems to me we need water for growing food and for safe drinking water, not fracking.
