Fire closes area of Sequoia National Forest

The Fresno BeeJuly 12, 2014

The Kiavah Wilderness area of the Sequoia National Forest is now closed due to the impending danger of the Nicolls Fire, a forest supervisor said.

People will not be allowed in the area until the wildfire, which began Friday, is contained. The fire presents a significant safety risk, said Kevin Elliott, Forest Supervisor for Sequoia National Forest. The prohibited area is within the Kiavah Wilderness section of the forest and includes the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.

Anyone found in the prohibited section could face up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
